Okay, okay, okay. Let me say this outright... the views presented in my comics are NOT necessarily the views held by my fellow guildmates! This is a comic that ties in with my Ultima views... I said this before (though not on this site) and I'll say it again. I'm an Ultima nut. I love all of the old Ultima games (save Ultima IX, which was a cool game in it's own right, but not an Ultima in my view. More on that later, possibly). The Ultimas were some of my first computergames, and Ultima 7 stands out as my favorite game, console or PC, of all time. I won't get into reasons now, lets just say it rocks :) Anyhow, when UO came out, at first I was stoked. Here I was, able to interact with other Ultima fans, in a living breathing Britannia! Granted, I couldn't be the Avatar, journeying with Iolo, Dupre, Shamino and the gang as I had in all my other ventures, but I could still be a living partcicipant! But then I played it...
Disheartened only begins to describe it. The game engine itself was fantastic, and I find it better than any new MMOG on the market today, it lends itself beautifully to a medieval environment. But let's face it people, the d3wd factor is damn high. It got so high that I stopped playing for a long time, and that was totally my call. I came back later, with a free month, and got into some great role playing, and eventually found my way here to DC. However, before that, I had run into many people portraying characters from other games. Believe it or not, that's not what bothers me, because as I see it, with this whole 'shard' story that UO adopted, people can live alternate lives on alternate shards. So who's to say that there isn't a Link or an Aragorn in these worlds? My problem stands when people are playing like this isn't even the world that they are on, and expect to be taken seriously. I actually ran into a Link once, saying he was sent from Hyrule to kill the evil Ganon and save Zelda. The last belief I held that UO held any semblance to my Ultimas of old besides names was blown away. I don't expect everyone who plays UO to have played previous Ultimas... but many of us old Ultima players are united in a family, you may have heard of the Ultima Dragons. I'm not saying a family where everyone knows each other, but everyone shares a love of Ultima for similar and different reasons. Ultima helped start my interest in all things fantasy, and art. I would draw things from Ultima, and because of it, look for more fantasy art, and dragon related things. It's indirectly paved the direction of my life, and my interests. So yeah, it may seem like I take this seriously, but that's just how I feel. Many old Ultima nuts refuse to play UO because of the lack of Ultima-ness it holds. It's not supposed to make a lick of difference for the non Ultima players, and I don't expect it to. All I want to do is point out my perspective. Play how you want, of course, hehe. Just know that there are some of us out there, who try to salvage what we can of Ultima lore. My high respect for RPing guilds stems from the fact that even though they don't all know the history of Ultima, they do the best they can to make the world real. And that's why I'm in a role playing guild, because if it wasn't for that, there would be no UO for me. :) Whew, thats the end of that rant! Don't expect too many like that! :P |
